Robert Rich, later Lord Holland, was the eldest son and third of seven children born to Robert Rich, 1st Earl of Warwick (1559–1619) and his first wife Penelope (1563–1607). His parents separated soon after Henry's birth, although they did not formally divorce until 1605, when Penelope married her long-time partner, Charles Blount, 8th Baron Mountjoy (1563-1606).

Earls of Warwick, der 3. und 4. Earl, starben ohne Nachkommen, wodurch deren Cousin Robert Rich, 2. Earl of Holland, 1673 die Titel als 5. Earl of Warwick vereinte. A Georgian Affair: Francis & Elizabeth, 1st Earl and Countess of Warwick. Skipping forward several generations, we come to Francis Greville (1719-1773) who inherited Warwick Castle and the title of 8 th Baron Brooke following the death of his father in 1727. He married Elizabeth Hamilton (1720-1800) in 1742.
