She was the daughter of the first Earl's eldest son the Hon. Robert Shirley (1673–1698), who predeceased his father (see the Baron Ferrers of Chartley for further history of this title). Lord Ferrers was succeeded in the baronetcy, viscountcy and earldom by his second son, the second Earl.

Shirley was born at East Sheen, the third son of Sir Robert Shirley, 4th Baronet and his wife Catherine Okeover.
Sir Robert Shirley, 1st Earl Ferrers. Ancestors and heirs Sir Robert Shirley, Baron Ferrers, Viscount Tamworth was created 1st Earl Ferrers in 1711. He was born at East Sheen and baptised at Mortlake, his father being a prisoner in the Tower of London at that time, where he died.
Property at Tamworth (Staffordshire) was acquired through the marriage of Robert Shirley (d. 1698), son of the 1st Earl, to Anne, daughter and heir of Sir Humphrey Ferrers.
