Hace 2 días · In 1846 Robert Smirke was replaced as the museum's architect by his brother Sydney Smirke, whose major addition was the Round Reading Room 1854–1857; at 140 feet (43 m) in diameter it was then the second widest dome in the world, the Pantheon in Rome being slightly wider.
15 de may. de 2024 · Sir Robert Smirke. He was the second son of Robert Smirke who was born at Wigton in 1752, became an R.A. in 1793, who executed the famous mezzotint of John Christian Curwen in 1791 and who was noted for the beauty of the innumerable coats-of-arms he painted on coach panels.
