On 4th July 1862 Dodgson, along with the Rev Robinson Duckworth, took Alice and her sisters Lorin and Edith on a rowing boat trip from Folly Bridge, Oxford, to Godstow. Dodgson made up a story of a girl named Alice and the adventures she had after falling into a rabbit hole.
