Catherine Rosalind Russell was born on June 4, 1907, in Waterbury, CT. The fourth of seven children born to James Edward Russell, a trial attorney, and the former Clara McKnight, a school teacher, Russell was raised in affluence on Waterbury's Cracker Hill, a conclave of stately Victorian homes shaded by fruit trees and backed by rose gardens.
