On 11 April 1966, he married Caroline Mary Victoria Pike (b. 27 September 1940) and they have four children: Rosemary Pema "Rosie" Bowes-Lyon (b. 1968), married on 7 September 1996 to Nicholas David Kirkland Glazebrook, they have three children.

He was born 29 May, 1940, the second son of Capt the Hon Michael Claude Hamilton Bowes Lyon (1893-1953), and his wife the former Elizabeth Margaret Cator (1899-1959), scion of that Norfolk landed gentry family.
