It has been part of Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship since its transfer from the Tarnobrzeg Voivodeship in 1999. It is the capital of Sandomierz County.
Sandomierz County (Polish: powiat sandomierski) is a unit of territorial administration and local government in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, south-central Poland. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998.
