Hijo de curtidor y hermano de un batihoja de cuya profesión tomó el sobrenombre, la formación inicial de Botticelli fue como platero, probablemente junto a su hermano Antonio, para entrar hacia 1464 en la bottega del pintor Filippo Lippi.
