Santarém (Portuguese pronunciation: [sɐ̃tɐˈɾɐ̃j] ⓘ) is a city and municipality located in the district of Santarém in Portugal. The population in 2021 was 58,671, in an area of 552.54 km 2. The population of the city proper was 29,929 in 2012. The mayor is Ricardo Gonçalves .

Entertainment. Map. Santarém , located north east of Lisbon on high ground overlooking the River Tagus (Tejo), is a strategic city with a long history. Santarém was occupied by the Romans and Visigoths and from the 8th to the 12th century by the Moors, when the city was known as Xantarim.
