Sarah Shelton Henry. Sarah Shelton (1738–1775), was the first wife of Founding Father Patrick Henry, the first Governor of Virginia . Early life and marriage. Shelton was born and raised in her family's home of thirteen rooms in Rural Plains in Hanover County, Virginia. In 1754, at age sixteen, Sarah and Patrick were married.

(It also became known as Shelton House.) As a wedding gift, her father gave the couple six slaves and the 300-acre Pine Slash Farm near Mechanicsville.
Dinah, an enslaved woman was one of six people given as a dowry to Patrick Henry upon his marriage to Sarah Shelton. By the time the Henrys were living at Scotchtown, Jenny and young Beck were also listed as enslaved property.
Henry's wife, Sarah Shelton Henry, dealt with depression and violent outbursts. Despite recommendations, together they refused to place her in a hospital, instead providing care for her at home until her death. Patrick and Sarah knew each other from childhood and fell in love.
