Sarah Stoddart Hazlitt (1774–1843) was an English journalist and walker, and wife of the essayist William Hazlitt . Early life and relationships. She was born in 1774, the only daughter of John Stoddart, lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Her only sibling was John Stoddart, who later became Editor of The Times. [1]

In this, Sarah Stoddart Hazlitt, like Murray, and also Dorothy Wordsworth, demonstrate that a different way of evaluating and valuing women’s walking accounts is urgently needed. Louise Ann Wilson has written about what she terms a “female sublime” in women’s writing about walking of this period.
This essay considers the Journal as a text which gives an insight into the life of Sarah Stoddart Hazlitt and discusses the self which is created and performed in that text.1 Written as a personal diary, the Journal first appeared in full as an appendix in the 1894 Le Gallienne text of William Hazlitt’s Liber Amoris as ‘Mrs Hazlitt’s Diary.’.
