In 1949 the palace became the residence of the first president of the German Democratic Republic, Wilhelm Pieck. The office and elegant modern President’s Garden date from this period. After the palace had been the seat of the State Council of East Germany from 1960 to 1964, it was finally used until 1990 to accommodate guests of the East German government.
Schönhausen Palace: A scene of German history During the National Socialist era, the palace was used as a central depot for so-called "degenerate art". Several thousand confiscated works of art were stored here and subsequently sold abroad. After the end of the Second World War, Schönhausen became the focus of the Cold War in the young GDR.
Schönhausen Palace is a Baroque palace at Niederschönhausen, in the borough of Pankow, Berlin, Germany. It is surrounded by gardens through which the Panke river runs. The palace is maintained by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg and reopened to the public in 2009 after extensive restoration.
