Sechele I was kgosi (or ruler) of the BaKwena, one of the principal communities of the larger BaTswana ethnic group in southern Africa, for over fifty years in the mid to late-nineteenth century. After the murder of his father Kgosi Motswasele II in 1821, which precipitated the division of the BaKwena, Sechele spent much of his early life in exile.

19 de abr. de 2024 · Sechele I (circa 1810-1892) was the last independent ruler of the northern Kwena (Bakwena) people of what is now Botswana, the principal group of the Hurutshe people of the Transvaal. The previous ruler, Motswasele, was assassinated in about 1821.

When Sechele was 12 years old he was initiated. He was then still with the Bamangwato. After another two years he and his party started on a long and extremely dangerous journey to the south, keeping as far west, in the Kgalagadi desert, as possible. They managed to reach Monyelatsela, Ghantsi, far to the south.
