Frederick VI (1371–1440), who controlled Nuremberg and other estates in Ansbach and Bayreuth in Franconia, became margrave of Brandenburg in 1411. In 1415, Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund (1368–1437) made Frederick elector of Brandenburg.

Sigismund was een zoon van keurvorst Joachim II Hector van Brandenburg uit zijn tweede huwelijk met Hedwig van Polen, een dochter van koning Sigismund I van Polen. In Maagdenburg was Sigismond de laatste door de paus aangestelde aartsbisschop; zijn opvolgers waren administrators van de Evangelische Kerk.
Hedwig Jagiellon ( Polish: Jadwiga Jagiellonka, Lithuanian: Jadvyga Jogailaitė, German: Hedwig Jagiellonica; 15 March 1513 – 7 February 1573) was a member of the Jagiellonian dynasty as a daughter of Sigismund I the Old of Poland.
