Sir John Gladstone, 1st Baronet, of Fasque and Balfour in the County of Kincardine, died at Fasque House in December 1851, 4 days shy of his 87th birthday, and was buried at St Andrew's Episcopal Church at Fasque. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir Thomas Gladstone, 2nd Baronet.

"Sir John Gladstone of Fasque, 1st Baronet, FRSE LLD (11 December 1764 – 7 December 1851) was a Scottish merchant, slave owner, Member of Parliament, and the father of the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.
Sir John Gladstone of Fasque, 1st Baronet (11 December 1764 – 7 December 1851) John Gladstone was a Scottish businessman, slave owner and Member of Parliament who owned some of the largest sugar plantations across the West Indies in Jamaica and Demerara (Guyana).

Of notable interest amongst the correspondence of William Ewart Gladstone are the 1099 letters written to his father, Sir John Gladstone, 1 st Baronet, between 1821 and 1851, the 1534 letters to his wife, Catherine Gladstone, née Glynne, between 1839 and 1894, and the 101 boxes of letters from the general public to William Ewart Gladstone.
Biography. Merchant and politican. He was born John Gladstones, though in 1787 he dropped the final 's' to become Gladstone. His father was Thomas Gladstones (1732–1809), a Leith merchant, his mother was Nelly (1739–1806), daughter of Walter Neilson, a merchant of Springfield, near Edinburgh.
