Pentz giftet seg med kongens datter Sophie Elisabeth Christiansdatter i 1634 under det store bilager. Ekteskapet utviklet seg til å bli svært ulykkelig. Etter Christian IVs død ble han avskjediget som guvernør av Frederik III. De siste årene av sitt liv var Pentz preget av psykiske problemer og deler av tiden ble han sperret inne på et rom.
