Hace 2 días · The city was founded in the 1730s, and after going through a series of different names (New Carthage, New London, Newton), its name became Wilmington in 1740, named after Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington. The area along the river had been inhabited by various successive cultures of indigenous peoples for thousands of years.

Hace 5 días · A small agricultural hamlet for its first 100 years, it developed into a prosperous port and market town after the Quakers moved there in the 1730s. The Quakers secured a borough charter from Thomas Penn, the proprietor of Pennsylvania, who named the town (1739) for his friend Spencer Compton, earl of Wilmington.

Hace 4 días · Spencer was a merchant who had been a pioneer in the Levant trade and Lord Mayor in 1594–5. He already owned Crosby Hall in the City and an estate at Canonbury, where he preferred to live. Against his wishes, his only surviving child, Elizabeth, married William, 2nd Lord Compton, later the 1st Earl of Northampton, also in 1599.

From her marriage the Marquesses of Northampton, Bishop Compton of London and two Prime Ministers (the Earl of Wilmington and Spencer Perceval) were descended. 1584.
