The Quakers secured a borough charter from Thomas Penn, the proprietor of Pennsylvania, who named the town (1739) for his friend Spencer Compton, earl of Wilmington.

The son of William Compton, 1st earl in the Compton line (whom he succeeded in 1630), he warmly supported King Charles I.

He left England for good in 1774, took up voluntary exile in Switzerland, and put his affairs in the hands of trustees, led by his banker and brother-in-law, Henry Drummond ( c . 1730–95).
