Lord Northampton married in 1599 or 1600 to Elizabeth Spencer, a daughter of Sir John Spencer who had been Lord Mayor of London in 1594. Northampton was the eldest son of Spencer Compton, 2nd Earl of Northampton, and Mary Beaumont. He sat as Member of Parliament for Warwickshire from 1640 to 1642.
