He repeatedly defeated both Danish forces and his domestic opponents, who favoured a union with Denmark, before falling in battle against the Danish king Christian II.
Falleció en Jönköping el 14 de diciembre de 1503 y está enterrado en la catedral de Strängnäs. Fue nombrado senador en 1482. Apoyo al rey Juan I de Dinamarca en la conquista de Suecia oponiéndose a Sten Sture el Viejo sin embargo se reconcilio con él y le sucedió como regente tras su muerte en 1503.
