Steve “Clem” Grogan was born on July 13, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. Grogan, a musician, dropped out of high school and was intimately involved in the Manson Family murders. Grogan was a troubled and difficult child growing up and when his frustrated parents lost hope, they decided to drop him off at Spahn Ranch.

During the days when Grogan hung around with the Beach Boy Dennis Wilson, he crashed Wilson's uninsured Ferrari while racing through the roads outside of the Spahn Ranch. Grogan was convicted of the 1969 murder of the Spahn Movie Ranch hand Donald "Shorty" Shea and was paroled in 1985.
