Los ballets revelan el desarrollo estilístico del compositor: desde El pájaro de fuego, cuyo estilo muestra la poderosa influencia de Rimski-Kórsakov, a Petrushka con su fuerte énfasis bitonal, para llegar finalmente a la salvaje disonancia polifónica de La consagración de la primavera.
