Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens (18 April 1847 – 2 May 1872) was a Royal Navy officer, the fifth son and seventh child of English novelist Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine. [1] Biography.

He was the smallest of all the nine surviving children ; even as an adult, he was only just over five feet tall. His childhood nickname, "Ocean Spectre," came, as Dickens's biographer John Forster wrote, "from a strange little weird yet most attractive look in his large wondering eyes."

Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens, the seventh child and fifth son of Charles and Catherine Dickens, was named after a member of the Haldimand family noted for his charitable works, William Haldimand (1764-1862).
Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens (1847-72), CD’s seventh child, who was a midshipman; he was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 30 Aug 1867. He died at sea on 24 April 1872.
Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens, the son of Charles Dickens and Catherine Hogarth Dickens, was born on 18th April, 1847. It was an exceptionally painful labour and was probably a breech delivery. Between 1844 and 1847 she gave birth to three sons, none of them desired by Dickens, although he warmed to each of them during their baby years.
