Szczecinek je izrastao iz zamka kog je početkom 14. vijeka podigao tadašnji pomeranijski vojvoda Vartislav IV, u tom močvarnom kraju radi odbrane Szczecina od Markgrofovije Brandenburg. Naselje se isprva zvalo Novi Szczecin, a kasnije Mali Szczecin iz tog je nastalo današnje ime Szczecinek .
