Born into the House of Nádasdy, he was the son of Ferenc I Nádasdy de Nádasd (1492-1541) and his first wife, Orsolya Therjék de Szenterzsébet (d. 1529).

El barón Tamás Nádasdy de Nádasd y Fogarasföld (españolizado como Tomás Nádasdy) (I), apodado el Gran Palatino (1498-1562), fue un estadista húngaro, hijo de Ferenc I Nádasdy y su primera mujer Orsolya Therjék de Szenterzsébet. Después de la muerte de su madre, su madrastra fue Orsolya Véssey de Vésse.
Korának egyik legműveltebb, legnagyobb életutat bejárt politikusa és egyik legtehetségesebb diplomatája, a török elleni háborúk sikeres hadvezére, aki az utókortól a „nagy nádor” titulust érdemelte ki. Bárói címét 1553 -ban kapta I. Ferdinándtól .
