Hace 5 días · Following abolition, Henry VIII created the new Diocese of Gloucester and on 3 September 1541, the abbey church became its cathedral, with John Wakeman, last abbot of Tewkesbury, as its first bishop. The diocese covered the greater part of Gloucestershire , with small parts of Herefordshire and Wiltshire .

Hace 4 días · In 1102 Robert FitzHamon founded the Benedictine abbey of Tewkesbury, providing the other main feature of the town's history. In the 12th century FitzHamon's successors as lords of the honor of Gloucester had a seat at Tewkesbury, which in 1140 was burned by Waleran, Earl of Worcester, and his men.
Hace 2 días · The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540. Some of the monastic buildings were dismantled, but the townsfolk of Tewkesbury were allowed to buy the church building. The price paid was £483. There is a fine selection of mediaeval stained-glass in the Abbey. The Abbey was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott from 1875 to 1879.
Hace 2 días · The chief house of the manor, where Edward Despenser and his wife lived in the late 14th century, lay in the park south of the town and became the centre of a separate estate called TEWKESBURY PARK or TEWKESBURY LODGE. The Crown granted the park and lands to Tewkesbury Abbey in 1504.

Hace 3 días · The building of the Abbey was started in 1090 and was consecrated in 1121. The inside of the building has massive Norman pillars and the central tower is said to be the finest Norman tower in the World. The Bell Hotel was built around 1696 and probably stands on the monastic hostelry within the Abbey precincts.
