The Barracks Thief: The title story depicts three young soldiers awaiting deployment to the Vietnam War, all "Fucking New Guys" ignored by the more veteran men. Unhappy for their own private reasons, known to the reader but not each other, the three are forced to bond when sent to guard an ammunition depot in the woods.

I say “ostensibly” because the novel starts out following the life of one character, then sort of starts over again with a second, completely switches it up in the middle with a third, then ends following the second character again.
