The Great Steamboat Race is an annual steamboat race, taking place the Wednesday before the first Saturday of May, three days before the Kentucky Derby, as part of the Kentucky Derby Festival. The race was first run in 1963 and it takes place on the Ohio River in the span that runs between Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana.
Wednesday, May 1, 2024. 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM: Boarding. 5:45 PM: Departure. 6:00 PM: Race Begins. As one of the original and longest standing traditions of the Kentucky Derby Festival, the Great Steamboat Race has been taking place on the Ohio River since 1963.

The race is on Wednesday, May 3, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Boarding will take place from 4:30-5:30 p.m., with the race starting at 6 p.m. It takes place on the Ohio River, with the contenders sailing upriver against one another.

The hometown steamboat was declared the winner of the Great Steamboat Race Wednesday night following deliberations by the judges, the boat Captains, Derby Festival Officials and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg.
