The Intimate Ellington is a studio album by the American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington. It was compiled from sessions recorded in 1969, 1970 and 1971, and released on the Pablo label in 1977.

Mercer Kennedy Ellington (March 11, 1919 – February 8, 1996) was an American musician, composer, and arranger. His father was Duke Ellington , whose band Mercer led for 20 years after his father's death.

Mercer Ellington shared what he knew about his father. He seems to know a lot yet on the other hand kind of limited because a parent will limit their own behavior around their kids. The father and son dynamic is interesting to learn about. Would like to have learned more about Mercer and his mother.
Ellington and Strayhorn began building a home library of Shakespeare, seeking out Shakespeare experts, and reading through the canon during orchestra downtime. The title comes from Act IV scene i of A Midsummer Night's Dream , where Hippolyta says: "I never heard / So musical a discord, such sweet thunder."
