He was noted for his theories of naturalism, which underlie his monumental 20-novel series Les Rougon-Macquart, and for his intervention in the Dreyfus Affair.
Early life. Zola was born in Paris in 1840 to François Zola (originally Francesco Zolla) and Émilie Aubert. His father was an Italian engineer with some Greek ancestry, [9] who was born in Venice in 1795, and engineered the Zola Dam in Aix-en-Provence; his mother was French. [10] .
