The Prussian army rejected him for health reasons but Osterkamp joined the Freiwilliges Marine Flieger Corps and became the German navy's highest scoring ace. When the war ended, he went east to fight the Bolsheviks. At the age of 43, Osterkamp was back in uniform again, flying for the Luftwaffe.
