Newcastle, Thomas Pelham Holles, Duke ofNEWCASTLE, THOMAS PELHAM HOLLES, DUKE OF. (1793–1768). British statesman. A privy councillor from 1717, in 1724 Newcastle became one of Robert Walpole's secretaries of state.

Politician; 1711 inherited the enormous wealth of his uncle John Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle whose surname he took. Created Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1715 as a reward for his support of the Hanoverian cause at the time of the first Jacobite rebellion. Held political office almost continuously from 1724.
