Somerset faced less manageable opposition from his younger brother Thomas, who has been described as a "worm in the bud". As King Edward's uncle, Thomas Seymour demanded the governorship of the king's person and a greater share of power.

Upon their marriage, Seymour moved to his wife’s home, Chelsea Manor in London, where Catherine was living with her step-daughter, the then-14-year-old Elizabeth I.
