With his brother, Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset and Lord Protector of England, he vied for control of their nephew, the young King Edward VI ( r. 1547–1553 ).

  4. Thomas Seymour came from a large and fairly impressive English gentry stock. Born in around 1508 at Wulfhall in Wiltshire, England. His parents were Sir John Seymour and Margery Wentworth. Margery was a renowned English beauty whose looks inspired some of the poetry of John Skelton; John Seymour was an accomplished knight and sheriff.
