Background and education. Born in London, he was the son of Edward Archer Wilde, a solicitor, and Marianne (née Norris). His younger brother Sir Alfred Thomas Wilde was a Lieutenant-General in the Madras Army, while Sir John Wylde (Chief Justice of the Cape Colony) and Thomas Wilde, 1st Baron Truro (Lord Chancellor) were his uncles.
Thomas Wilde, 1st Baron Truro (7 July 1782 – 1855), Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, was the second son of Thomas Wilde, an attorney. He was born in London and educated at St Paul's School and was admitted an attorney in 1805.

Lord Chancellor A lawyer called to the Bar in 1817, he established an extensive law practice before becoming a Whig MP in 1831. He was appointed Solicitor General in 1839 and became Attorney General two years later.
