Timothy Hackworth (22 December 1786 – 7 July 1850) was an English steam locomotive engineer who lived in Shildon, County Durham, England and was the first locomotive superintendent of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Timothy Hackworth was born on 22nd December, 1786, at Wylam, Newcastle to John Hackworth, foreman blacksmith at Wylam Colliery. He left school at the age of 14 and served a seven years' apprenticeship at the colliery, under his father, in the same trade.

Timothy Hackworth was an engineer and inventor, born in Wylam on the 22nd December 1786. He began work as an apprentice blacksmith under his father at Wylam Colliery, where he later worked on steam locomotives as they were first beginning to be used at the colliery.
