Georgetown University is a private Jesuit research university in Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., United States. Founded by Bishop John Carroll in 1789 as Georgetown College, it is the oldest Catholic institution of higher education in the United States and the nation's first federally chartered university.

Established in 1789, Georgetown is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university. Georgetown actively seeks and recruits highly talented and motivated students from all backgrounds. The university enrolls more than 6,300 undergraduates from all 50 states and over 130 countries; approximately a third of all students are fluent in more than one language when they arrive on campus.
