A figure of victory, probably of Roman workmanship, was found in a field at Up Holland in the 19th century and old records indicate early Celtic or Welsh settlement in the area.

This led Robert de Holland to take the advice of the Bishop of Lichfield to convert the site to a monastic Benedictine priory. It was the largest and last of four Benedictine monasteries to be founded in Lancashire.
