He collaborated with Viktor Léon to update the plot to contemporary Paris and contacted Richard Heuberger to work as the composer. However, Richard’s score was unsatisfactory, and he had to part ways. Franz Lehár’s name was suggested as he had already worked with Stein and Léon, and Lehár delivered emphatically.

Victor Léon est un dramaturge et librettiste austro-hongrois né le 4 janvier 1858 à Szenitz (aujourd'hui en Slovaquie), et mort le 3 février 1940 à Vienne. Auteur prolifique, il est surtout connu comme auteur, avec Leo Stein , de l' opérette de Franz Lehár La Veuve joyeuse ( Die lustige Witwe ).
Im Jubiläumsjahr trug das Theaterstück Der Musikant Gottes von Viktor Léon und Ernst Decsey zu einer problematischen Popularisierung bei; 1926 bzw. 1929 fanden die Gründungen des Brucknerbundes für Oberösterreich und der Internationalen Bruckner-Gesellschaft statt. Vereinnahmung durch die Nazis

The Merry Widow (German: Die lustige Witwe) is an operetta by the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story - concerning a rich widow, and her countrymen's attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband - on an 1861 comedy play, L'attaché d'ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac.
