Edward VIII was the only British sovereign to voluntarily resign the crown.

It took 16 years before another woman managed to push all male rivalry aside: Queen Elizabeth II. In 1975 there was some 'collective nomination' to honour the merit of women. Edward, Duke of Windsor, visited Britain only twice after his abdication in 1936: Funeral of King George VI (1952):Edward was allowed to return to England to attend the funeral of his brother, King George VI, in 1952.Wallis Simpson (the Duchess of Windsor) accompanied him during this visit.
