Walter Marty Schirra Jr. (/ ʃ ɜːr ˈ ɑː /, March 12, 1923 – May 3, 2007) was an American naval aviator, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. In 1959, he became one of the original seven astronauts chosen for Project Mercury, which was the United States' first effort to put humans into space.

The MA-8 (Mercury-Atlas) mission with Sigma 7 spacecraft was the third marned orbital flight by the United States, and made the six orbits in 9-1/4 hours.
During the flight, astronauts Schirra, Donn Eisele, Command/Service Module (CSM) Pilot, and Walter Cunningham, Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) Pilot, tested the spacecraft's systems, in particular the systems that had been redesigned after the Apollo 1 fire.
