Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon’s mother, Nina Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck, married Claude Bowes-Lyon (the Earl of Strathmore from 1904) in 1881. They had ten children, of whom Elizabeth was the penultimate child and youngest daughter. Lady Strathmore had a close relationship with her children, and she taught the youngest ones to read and write.

Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon spent much of her childhood at Glamis Castle, twelve miles north of Dundee, which has belonged to the Lyon family since the fourteenth century. The oldest surviving parts of the castle date from 1372, although it was remodelled in the seventeenth century by the 3rd Earl of Strathmore, who added the distinctive turrets with conical roofs.
