President Andrew Johnson ordered the flags flown at half-staff to honor Scott, and Scott's funeral was attended by many of the leading Union generals, including Grant, George G. Meade, George H. Before 1812 it was conducted as an apprentice school for military engineers and, in effect, as the first U.S. school of engineering.
