Portland was the son of Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland and his wife Elizabeth Noel, daughter of Wriothesley Baptist Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough.
William was in his minority when he succeeded as 2nd Duke of Portland in 1726. His education had been completed largely at the hands of John Achard, a Swiss scholar who spent many years residing at the family seat of Bulstrode. The 2nd Duke did not really play any part in public life.
Hace 3 días · William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a trustee of the British Museum. In 1734 he married Margaret-Cavendish Harley, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Oxford. She was a great patron of the arts and sciences. He was buried on 8th May 1762 and she on 30th July 1785. Their son William became Prime Minister.
With his death in 1990 the honour became extinct. The title Earl of Portland did not die out with the dukedom, however. It was inherited by Henry Noel Bentinck, as 11th Earl of Portland. The 11th Earl was a direct descendent of William Bentinck, 1st Count Bentinck of the Holy Roman Empire, son of the 1st Earl of Portland by his second marriage.
