PORTLAND, WILLIAM HENRY CAVENDISH BENTINCK, 3rd Duke of (1738–1809), prime minister of England, son of William, 2nd duke (1709–1762), and grandson of the 1st duke. His mother, Margaret, granddaughter and heiress of John Holles, duke of Newcastle, brought to her husband Welbeck Abbey and other estates in Nottinghamshire.
Bentinck was born in Buckinghamshire, the second son of Prime Minister William Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, and Lady Dorothy (née Cavendish), only daughter of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire. On the marriage the family name became Cavendish-Bentinck. He was educated at Westminster School, a boys' public school in Westminster, London.
Portland was born William Henry, Lord Titchfield in April 1738 into an aristocratic family at Bulstrode Park in Buckinghamshire. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was briefly MP for the seat of Weobley in 1761 but was elevated to the House of Lords upon the death of his father the following year.
