Hace 3 días · The house in Bulstrode Park was erected by the Duke of Somerset between 1855 and 1865 on the site of a house built by the notorious Judge Jeffreys in 1686 and enlarged by William Bentinck, the first Earl of Portland. On a hill to the south-east of the house are ancient earthworks.

Hace 4 días · The manor descended to the earl of Portland's grandson, William Bentinck, duke of Portland, who sold it in 1742 to Hugh Bethell. Bethell bought another estate the same year, called Baswick Hill then but later Low Baswick. At inclosure in 1796 at least 881 a. were copyhold of the manor of Leven.
Hace 1 día · Improved roads around the town had a positive effect on trade and business in Kilmarnock. By the start of the 19th century, William Bentinck, 4th Duke of Portland, wanted "the best way" to transport coal between Kilmarnock and the seaside settlement of Troon for onward shipping.

Hace 4 días · Charles James Fox, however, refused to serve under Shelburne, and demanded the appointment of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland. In 1783, the House of Commons forced Shelburne from office and his government was replaced by the Fox–North Coalition .
