William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, KG (14 December 1748 – 29 July 1811), was a British nobleman, aristocrat, and politician. He was the eldest son of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, by his wife, the heiress Lady Charlotte Boyle, suo jure Baroness Clifford, who brought in considerable money and estates to the Cavendish family.
Sir William was a Knight of the Garter, and inherited the barony of Clifford, of Lanesborough, from his mother. He succeeded his father as Duke in 1764. On 6 June 1774, he married Georgiana [d. 1806], daughter of John, 1st Earl Spencer. They had a son, William Spencer (who became the 6th Duke of Devonshire), and two daughters.

William Cavendish, 2nd Earl of Burlington of the second creation, became the 7th Duke of Devonshire in 1858. He was grandson of the 6th Duke 's uncle, Lord George Cavendish. An accomplished scholar, he became Chancellor of London University at the age of 28, later Chancellor of Cambridge University and founder of the Cavendish Laboratory there.
