William George Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, KG, PC (21 May 1790 [1] – 18 January 1858), styled Marquess of Hartington until 1811, was a British peer, courtier, nobleman and Whig politician. Known as the "Bachelor Duke", he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1827 and 1828 and again between 1830 and 1834.

The Cavendish family became established in Derbyshire as a result of the marriage of Sir William Cavendish (d. 1557) to Elizabeth Barlow, heiress of Hardwick and later Countess of Shrewsbury. Chatsworth (purchased in 1549) and other estates were added to the Barlow and Hardwick properties, and these eventually all passed to William Cavendish, created Earl of Devonshire in 1618.
William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, KG (14 December 1748 – 29 July 1811), was a British nobleman, aristocrat, and politician. He was the eldest son of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire , by his wife, the heiress Lady Charlotte Boyle , suo jure Baroness Clifford, who brought in considerable money and estates to the Cavendish family.
Lord Chamberlain The son of William and Georgiana, Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Cavendish succeeded to the dukedom in 1811. He never married, earning him the epithet the 'Bachelor Duke'. Although he was a Whig grandee and served as Lord Chamberlain to both George IV and William IV, Devonshire's interests were primarily cultural. He was one of Landseer's most important patrons.
