It was built by Sir William Cecil from 1555–87 and is considered one of the most magnificent houses of the Elizabethan Age. Cecil, later Lord Burghley, was lord treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I and one of her key advisers.

Biographers believe that Bacon was educated at home in his early years owing to poor health, which would plague him throughout his life. He received tuition from John Walsall, a graduate of Oxford with a strong leaning toward Puritanism.

Sir Richard Cromwell died only four years after Thomas Cromwell.
