When Earl William Fitz-Robert was born on 23 November 1116, in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England, his father, Robert 1st Earl of Gloucester, was 26 and his mother, Mabel FitzRobert, was 16. He married Hawise De Beaumont Countess of Leicester in 1150, in Leicestershire, England. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 5 daughters.
In 1249 Walter Fitz Robert and his wife, Ida, sued William Longespée II regarding four properties then in Wiltshire, but now in Berkshire. The four properties in question were apparently part of the inheritance of Ida's mother, Countess Ela, who appears to have controlled the lands until 1236, when she released her lands to her son, William Longespée II.
